Dorothy Gillmeister, educator and writer, was born in 1943
in Montreal, Quebec, Canada,
but grew up in the countryside, where she first began to see life in terms of
landscape. She has been writing poetry since she was 14. Her first poetry
collection, Mistress Amelia and Other Poems, was published in Toronto in 1985. More
recently, her poems have been accepted by many Korean literary journals, where
they have been published in English and in Korean translation. She has made her
home in Korea since 1997, and cannot imagine living anywhere else.
She holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Toronto specializing
in Adult Education. She also has degrees in English, Journalism, and Elementary
Education. At various times in her life she has worked as a teacher, a
laboratory technician, a systems analyst, a puppeteer, an affirmative action
officer, a counselor and therapist, a science writer, and a documentary video producer.
Currently she teaches Communicative English at Yonsei
University in Seoul,
and spends her free time writing, taking photographs, traveling, and dreaming
about sailing.
